What is ROCKET?

ROCKET is a one-day, interactive course aimed at primary-aged children. It enables them to become resilience champions within their schools.

The role of the group is to look at what the school already does to promote resilience, as well as where the areas for improvement are regarding resilience and how the resilience champions can improve on these. There is a focus on what mental health is and how children can support their mental health and other people.

Throughout the course, we refer to Resilient Ralph. For those schools that have received ROAR training, the ROCKET course complements and works alongside all the ROAR principles and approaches.

What does ROCKET stand for?

ROCKET stands for Resilient, Open, Caring, Kind, Equal, and Togetherness.

When developing ROCKET, we consulted with primary schools in Liverpool to ensure the course would be beneficial and impactful within schools. After trialling the final course in these schools, positive feedback from both children and staff was received.

The course also reflects trends identified in the Oxwell survey, encouraging discussion around body image, social media, loneliness and bullying.

The children are invited to participate in pre- and post-surveys to ensure we successfully inform the ROCKET champions of our key messages about bullying, resilience, and mental health. The survey allows the children to express their views on what they do and do not like, which we will review.

Who can it be delivered to?

The course can be delivered to up to a class of children and as a full day’s training that fits in with your school day. We recommend the course be given to years 5 and 6, and you can target a specific year group or have a mix across year groups.

You can target a specific year group or mix across year groups.

The course is split into five separate workshops:

Session 1 – Looks at the concept of mental health, exploring what makes us feel happy and sad and focuses on friendships – looking at ideal and non-ideal friends.

Session 2 – Learn about resilience and what it means. Reflect on times when young people have been resilient and who help us.

Session 3 – What makes a good resilience leader? The importance of kindness and being a role model.

Session 4 – Recognising that everyone has different views, opinions and perspectives. Look at things from other points of view and explore key themes such as bullying, social media and body image.

Session 5 – Launching the ROCKET.

ROCKET champions create a plan for how they will be resilient in their school, spread kindness, support themselves and others, and show others that they are ROCKET resilience champions. Then, they launch the ROCKET.
